Erectile dysfunction: Most Popular Oral Medications and Their Side-effects!!

Erectile dysfunction or impotence is the inability of an individual to sustain erections for satisfactory intercourse during sex. With the advancement of medical science, a number of anti-impotence medications were introduced in the market within last few years. Out of these medications few has gained immense popularity like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra etc. All these are synthetic oral drugs which have ample of benefits as well as side-effects.

Viagra, Cialis and Levitra all works on the same principle. These drugs enhance the nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide is a chemical produced in the body during sexual stimulation that causes blood vessels in the penis to relax and open resulting in firmer and stronger erections.

Since these medications are made up of certain chemicals thus they are not recommended for all men. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra may not be suitable for those who have:

• High blood pressure
• Heart problems: - It includes heart pain during sex, recent heart attack, heart rhythm problems.
• Stroke: - During last 6 months
• Retina disorders
• Leukemia or sickle cell anemia

Furthermore these drugs due to their chemical composition react with certain other medications like nitrates. Thus these drugs should not be taken with nitrates drugs because their combined effect can result in dangerous situations like low blood pressure and loss of consciousness. Some of the medications that have nitrates are:

• Isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil, Dilatrate)
• Nitroglycerin (Minitran, Nitro-Bid, others)
• Recreational drugs such as amyl nitrite or nitrite
• Isosorbide mononitrate (Monoket, Imdur, others

Thus take doctor’s advice before opting for any of the above medication.
