The effects of Alcohol on Erectile dysfunction:

The actual effects of alcohol on ED or erectile dysfunction have always been unpredictable. Alcohol which is otherwise considered bad in large quantities, some studies however indicate that moderate level of alcohol could actually be beneficial to overall health.

This has however been a controversial topic since long. There are many questions on the effects of alcohol on sexual health. The potential of drinks to interfere with libido and climax has been debated upon. Erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual disorder among men in the United States. Over 3 lakhs cases are diagnosed every year in addition to the many unreported cases.

First, we need to evaluate how an erection actually occurs. The brain is stimulated through a stimulus which can be a physical or sensory touch. The muscles of the penis are then directed to relax and this increases blood flow to the penis. The blood pressure in the penis then expands the penis, thereby creating an erection. The ability to maintain or sustain an erection depends on the capacity of the penis muscles to hold the blood for the required period. Erections thus depend on blood flow. Alcohol increases blood volume to some extent, which in turn increases blood pressure. One remains in the state for as long as the excessive liquid has been removed from the blood through urine. In theory thus, alcohol consumption causes an erection. However again, there are no studies that conclusively support or disprove of this claim. Hence, even if it is said that men who have consumed alcohol have better sex, intoxication is not a solution to erectile dysfunction. Moreover, being intoxicated through the use of drugs and tobacco is actually indicated as one of the major causes of all dysfunctions.
